Overcoming Depression and Anxiety– A Mother and Son’s Story
Sirli (38)
When I sought MER Biofeedback therapy to help my child with depression, I unexpectedly discovered, while sitting in the therapy chair myself, that I was also battling hidden depression and anxiety.
I discovered MER Biofeedback therapy through a friend whose entire family attends sessions. I was deeply concerned about my child, who was experiencing severe depression. I booked a session for him, but when he fell ill, I decided to use the appointment for myself instead.
I sat in the therapy chair with no expectations, ready to experience and receive. I had no idea what would emerge. The therapist asked questions, and I felt comfortable opening up. As a result, many things I had never addressed came to light. Hidden traumas surfaced—things I hadn’t even been aware of. I had no idea I was so anxious and depressed. I had grown accustomed to living in a way where others’ needs and desires came first, and I hadn’t noticed that I was actually unhappy.

I felt amazing! Even my son noticed at home that I was a completely different person, and it made an impression on him. After that, we started attending therapy together. The fact that my transformation was immediately visible had a very encouraging effect on him. For the next two days, I was overcome with bursts of laughter and a pleasant sense of happiness. Then, the worries and routines of everyday life returned, weighing me down, and the happiness faded.
After the second therapy session, I began noticing my own thought patterns—what I was doing and how I could do things differently. I felt my body opening up more. Even if you understand something intellectually, changes can’t happen if your body isn’t ready to receive them. The more I attended therapy, the more I saw how consistency helped solidify a positive state of mind.
After the first few sessions, I quickly fell back into my old, familiar rhythm. My traumas were so deep that I couldn’t see them myself. It was as if a dark veil had been covering them. Attending therapy has been a journey of self-discovery for me. As time went on, I began to understand how little we truly know about how the human body and mind work—how thoughts and emotions affect our bodies.

The anxiety, as it once was, has disappeared. Mild tremors still occur, but they are manageable. I no longer get stuck in that state for days or weeks.
Only now, looking back from a better place, do I see clearly how incredibly anxious I used to be. I was a chronic worrier. I lived as if I had to help everyone else first and never needed help myself. I had suppressed myself tremendously.
I was living in survival mode, constantly exhausted.
Parallel to attending therapy, it became clear that both my child and I have ADHD. This realization greatly eased tensions and removed pressure. Knowing that our brains simply work differently was actually a relief. We can now live more consciously. Today, we are both more independent—he manages his own affairs, and I can dedicate more time to myself. I’ve become more empathetic toward myself, noticing my own needs before others’.
I started saying “no” more often. I realized I couldn’t help others if I wasn’t in a good place myself. I needed rest. I began articulating my thoughts, boundaries, desires, and needs differently. I lost some people in the process, but it was necessary because they weren’t adding value to my life. Where I used to think pessimistically, I now know that everything is possible and solvable. Things are as they are, but even that will change!
Embarking on this therapeutic journey together with my son has brought us closer. Our communication has improved, and our personal growth journeys have begun. He also feels much better, has changed his diet and exercise routine, and is no longer stuck in negativity.
For me, MER Biofeedback therapy has been an essential tool for self-discovery. Better understanding myself has been a valuable part of improving my life. The depression and anxiety that surfaced during therapy are now a thing of the past. Both my son and I are on a healing journey, now more aware of ourselves and our needs.
I recommend MER Biofeedback therapy to anyone with even the slightest interest in experiencing a shift in self-awareness at a bodily level. If anyone crosses paths with me, I always share about this fascinating therapy that changed our lives.
Terapeut
Kristo Epner
Therapy has helped Sirli understand the unconscious aspects of herself that had been overshadowed by caring for others.
After every session, she has left with new insights that have influenced her past behavior and emotional state.
With each session, Sirli has gotten closer to herself and started making choices based on her own values and well-being.
Sirli has delved deep into self-reflection and made practical changes in her actions and attitudes, bringing more joy and gratitude into her life.
It’s also heartwarming to see the emotional bond and cheerful interaction between Sirli and her son in the therapy room. Since they attend therapy in parallel, their story beautifully demonstrates how different family members supporting their emotional states can bring them closer and create better synergy in the home environment.
